The students then went to the track to simulate what carrying water is like - each sixth grader carried between one and two gallons of water for about 1.5 to 2.0 miles. This simulation was designed to have the students gain an appreciation for (1) how important water is to life, (2) appreciate how hard it is to carry water for an extended period of time and (3) realize how fortunate we are in this country to have plentiful and clean drinking water. The kids were incredibly engaged and seemed to leave this experience, coupled with the in-classroom event of three weeks ago, with a real appreciation for the importance of clean water and how each of them can make a difference. |
