Drink Local Drink Tap

This past week Bud Thomas with an assist from Sue Gable and Warren Gable, presented a session on water conservation to Aurora Middle School. It was funded by the Rotary Club of Solon under the direction of Drink Local Drink Tap.
Ben Jurek Education Director for Drink Local Drink Tap (DLDT) was on site to deliver a unique live feed from Uganda. Erin Huber Rosen (CEO of DLDT) - spoke to the kids by live feed from Uganda for about 20 minutes on the importance of water conservation, education and preservation. She was able to showcase the beauty of Uganda, sharing images of one of DLDT's operational wells, and the community gathering water for their families.
The students then went to the track to simulate what carrying water is like - each sixth grader carried between one and two gallons of water for about 1.5 to 2.0 miles. This simulation was designed to have the students gain an appreciation for (1) how important water is to life, (2) appreciate how hard it is to carry water for an extended period of time and (3) realize how fortunate we are in this country to have plentiful and clean drinking water.

The kids were incredibly engaged and seemed to leave this experience, coupled with the in-classroom event of three weeks ago, with a real appreciation for the importance of clean water and how each of them can make a difference.
